In vain one searches in Renate Aller’s Oceanscapes for boats, navigation marks or birds. She has consciously omitted “themes” in the traditional sense. Even the perspective is always the same. Over a period of ten years she portrayed the South Shore of Long Island’s Atlantic coast from the same point. The wind and the light are the sole creators of variations on this theme.
Every beach wanderer knows this: Once the senses are sharpened, and the noisy impressions of everyday life have faded, only then can our eyes allow themselves to open up to the endless nuances of the light that make the ocean appear at times somber and dark, at other times gentle and cheerful. Nach Booten, Seezeichen oder Vögeln sucht man in Renate Allers Oceanscapes vergeblich. Bewusst verzichtete sie auf “Motive” im herkömmlichen Sinn. Selbst die Perspektive ist immer dieselbe. Zehn Jahre lang hat sie von einem bestimmten Punkt am Südstrand von Long Island den Atlantik porträtiert. Die Variation des Themas schufen allein der Wind und das Licht.
Jeder Strandspaziergänger kennt das: Sind die Sinne erst geschärft, die lauten Eindrücke des Alltags verblasst, öffnen sich uns die Augen für die unendlich feinen Nuancen des Lichts, die das Meer mal düster, mal zart und freundlich erscheinen lassen.
